Beginning to Respond

Choose a short passage from your novel that made an impact on you as you read it, that made you stop and think maybe even say "Oh wow" to yourself.  It may have made you stop and think because you made a personal connection. It may have made you wonder and ask a question. It may have made you react in some emotional way to the words on the paper.  In your response, quote the passage and list the page number that it can be found on.  Explain, in detail, why you chose this passage, what reason did you have that made you stop and think or had you reacting in some way. Include your feelings and emotions as well as state any connections you made (text to self, text to text, text to world). An example  from another novel of how to start is this:

"Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". pg 14
As I read this passage I couldn't believe that this could happen. How could the Jewish even be compared to dogs?"

  2. When I heard that the Jewish was being compared to dogs all my thoughts dropped in disbelief. I didn't know what to think at the time. Why would they compare the Jews to dogs? I think that know one should have enough power, so they can think they can do/say anything they want. What do you guys think? What are your thoughts? Am I the only one who thinks this?

    1. No. I agree Jews shouldn't be treated worse than dogs but I guess that is what a lot of people thought. I guess that Hitler convinced most Germans to dislike Jews. If someone was a Jew and lived in Germany and the Jew had a German as their friend what if that person believed Hitler and then they reported her friends to the Nazi's. It would really suck. But I also don't think that they shouldn't have the right to kill all Jews they find.

  3. The passage or quote I chose is from page 64 and it states "Every day another bomb destroys peoples homes". This really made me feel sad and angry. I get that this war was happening but this emphasizes the whole story and how much is being destroyed. Alex really helps people like when that man says that he has been homeless in the rain Alex offers his house to the man. I wish that there were more people like Alex in this world, offering what ever they have to help. This quote has a deeper meaning and it is like a metaphor to what is happening in the book, they have to move because of all of the destruction happening. The moral of the book is connected to Alex and how many risks he took and how courageous he was. One connection I made was when Mrs.M said "Keep in mind, this is still happening today." This made me wonder how can people go around killing others when they know they haven't done anything.? Don't they feel guilty? They had a say didn't they? They had a voice, it was their choice! In the book Jacob and the Jews had no freedoms. I mean imagine being locked up in your house for what, three years? I don't know how he could handle it?
I really feel so bad how can he manage hiding in a couch, I still want to learn a little more about why all of the soldiers or army (The Nazis ) wanted to kill the Jews, what had the Jews done?

    1. yes I agree with you tina on how "Every day another bomb destroys peoples homes". Because the bombs would explode in the people homes and also it was true back in 1934.

  4. page 48" Jacob scratched Sholom's scalp the way he used to like it, but Sholom's couldn't feel his fingers because his hair was matted in dirt."

Wow this page had a lot of meaning to me because I have a little brother to and if we were separated and were forced to hide then we both get united in a year I would be sad but I would be happy because I get to see him again.

when I read this part of the book, I had a tiny smile and I was sad but I was happy too, because jacob in this part of the book jacob meets his brother Sholom and at that part it had so much description.

the description in this part made me feel sad but happy like in the part when jacob has to hide in a couch so he can not be seen by the police officer because the family is moving to a bigger apartment. '' A silent knock on the Book and he pointed to the closet."

My questions are why did the police follow Hitler? The book says " what good is a god that makes children suffer." why do they all hate jews? what did HItler say to every one to make it seem okay to kill another human.

my emotions on this book are exiting and happy and also sad.

    1. Diego, I agree. Hitler was a really bad person but he was really good at getting people to like him and getting people to hate the Jews.

It also makes me sad when I read books about the Holocaust, but although it's a sad book it is also really exciting to read because it's interesting.

    2. Wow! This such a big part in the book and I didn't even realize this. It means so much of how they are being treated and I totally agree MonsterSlayer Just by that quote it makes me feel bad it emphasizes how much all the children have been threw so many of them hide and some of them die, how would I feel, would I feel like Mela tired and wanting to live in peace or wanting to die? This is such good part but how would Jacob want to live, I mean every kid wants to live but did he ever this that maybe Aunt Hannah wanted him to leave their family for a reason, maybe he was to hard to take care of? I can't get your second quote in my head straight it has a very deep meaning but what is it?

    3. I too don't understand why people actually followed Hitler in killing all the Jews. I would be equally as sacred and sad if I had not seen my brother for 1 year. I would feel very lonely and desperate to know if any of my family were still alive.

  5. Page: 68

    Passage:

"Here Genyek. Better you than the jews."

This part of the book is when a Nazi says that to a horse.
I chose this passage because horses are animals and Jews's are just like anyone else except for their religion. This just shows in one little sentence how much the Nazi's and Germans dislike the Jewish people. Jew's are human beings so they should be treated like everyone else. I have a connection from the books I have read about this. For example in "I survived the Nazi invasion" it explains this book but less information and it shares less of whats going on.
Another connection I made is that Donald Trump really dislikes all Mexicans for no reason (probably because he just wants to be funny and not serious about politics)and its just like the Germans disliking all of the Jews.
I had no idea what to think and it makes me really sad and angry when I read it.

    1. I also connect to when Mrs. Middleton said for the example, "Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". Again dogs shouldn't be compared to human beings. Jews need to be treated the same. There are still people out in the world who dislike Jews. Everyone has different opinions.

    2. I understand how you feel I still can't get how much it means to compare a horse to a Jew. I don't understand what they did I mean if they did something it wasn't all of the jews that did something wrong was it. Just because one person or animal is bad it doesn't mean that the whole species is.

    3. I see what you mean by a "Here Genyek. Better you than the jews." because that passage shows that the uncle cares about Genyek, and how he wants him to survive the nazi

    4. I don't like how the Taliban referred to the horse as a Jew. Jewish people are PEOPLE! They don't deserve to be treated badly just because of their religion.

    5. @French Fry

Exactly, I don't understand why anyone would have the strength to say that. Why do the group of Nazi's think different the Hitler? Do they just want to kill Jews to be known by people? They could have betrayed Hitler but no they all followed along. I don't get why so many people use to like Hitler.

Do you think that there are still people in the world that still believe what Hitler said to hate the jews?

  6. My passage is 'Everyday another bomb destroys peoples homes'.-it's on page 64)
This passage made me create a humungous image in my mind. I saw people crying, houses destroyed, and dust everywhere. The image made me feel so sad, and it felt like I was going to have a melt down. As soon as I read te passage, I ultimately put down a sticky note, and called it my passage, because it really hit me at the moment. I know I finished the book a while ago, it still hits me now.

    1. This passage dose create a strong picture in my mind as well. I feel really bad for the Jewish people because of what they had to go through. I could totally picture all the flames, dust and smoke as people were running away to survive.

  7. So in the book it talked about the nazis and the wicked things they did to the people at the concentration camps and how bad they treated the jewish families their. It just made me wonder about Adolf hitler army. I wondered if they were robots because robots don't know right from wrong but the people in the army are humans and their is a difference their. You see humans no right from wrong and everyone knows that killing people is not wright it’s totally 100% wrong, and again he had 2 million soldiers and Adolf Hitler is just one man. So the people could have said no it’s wrong to kill people but they didn’t instead they follow in his footsteps and do wrong I just don’t get it at all how people think and act.

  8. The passage that I choose to share when we had our circle was from page 57 and it read "Within minutes everything was still. Only smoke, flame and bodies remained. Trembling, Yurek found himself free". I chose this passage because it is the part when the Germans went into the ghetto and were passing through Poland. When they reached the ghetto they killed lots of Jews. I think this part of the book is very important because it is one part of the book where persecution starts happening. I think that what the Germans did was outrageous and that it isn't fair to kill every Jewish and Polish person they see. I don't understand why people who believed in Hitler followed his rules and if that men't they had to kill people they would do it. I could not live my life knowing that I was one of many people who participated in the act of killing EVERY Jewish person during the Holocaust.

  10. Of course the Nazis have there own story; What do you guys think the story was? No one can just dislike someone for no random reason, so what do you guys think for what could have triggered the Nazis?

  11. That is a good point probably the Nazi solders have their own personal connection with a Jew probable the people on Hitler's side dislike the Jew's because they did something bad to them or hurt them in any way.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Ninetail Fox I totally agree with you. The Nazis would have to be triggered to do so hateful things, but what do you think have happened? It must have been something serious, right?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well it kinda depends because some of the Nazis solders just hate without a reason and they just hate the Jews because Hitler does but that's not all why didn't other country join the war and helped the jews were they to scared?

  14. or were they also afraid of loosing their own people which I could understand because every single life is valuable.

  15. I agree with you about some people follow Hitler because he's more powerful, and now that he has a reason to hate them, the soldiers will follow his footprints. The other countries probably didn't want to get in the middle of something, so I would just state scared. I would say someone who wants to mind there own business.

      Delete
  17. @Ninetail Fox There could be a million reason for why he became very powerful. I don't know how he got so powerful, I can't think that on the top of my head, but I'm guessing it took a while and a bit of steps. He could have been popular when he was little, he could have had a speech that made them want to hate the Jews, he could have been a person that made most of the decisions in that city and made it a law, but I don't have any exact reasons. What do you think? Do you think that it could have been something else? What are your thoughts/ questions?

  18. Really good point their so first I think he started saying things that people wanted here it's just like a mouse in a trap you lower them with what they like then they get trapped and there is no turning back. And when people started realizing they made a horrible mistake that's when thousands and thousand of people started to die.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Ninetail Fox, you made an amazing example with the mouse, and how you cannot turn away from something like that. What do you think could have stopped the war? Someone taking 1 different step can change everything, but what do you think the Jews should have done instead of hiding or running away?

I really don't think there was anything they could have done. One day they were just minding there own business and then the next day they were being herded up at gunpoint to trains that would send them to their deaths. I really don't think there was much they could do at that point, Hitler was just too powerful for them.

      Delete
    2. @Marbles Ruby,
That's a really good point. I don't think that the Jewish couldn't have done much because any act of defiance and they were all punished with death. Any one different step taken by one of the Jewish people gave everyone hope and I think that's all they needed to keep going. As for the war, an act of defiance from one of the soldiers would have changed everything. If they had helped any of them they could have saved many lives and maybe helped them stop the other soldiers. Why did none of them want to help if there were surely some kind soldiers there? What do you think?

DON'T READ THIS UNLESS YOU ARE PAST CHAPTER 17!!!

"Papa, we're free! Free! I'm going to get some sugar and horsemeat for us so we can have a real dinner," Yurek shouted as he ran out of the building. "Don't worry!"
A shot rang out. Alex watched with horror as Yurek crumpled in the middle of the street. Looking up, Alex saw a German sniper duck out of sight from the edge of the roof."

This is just after the people of Poland rebelled up against the Germans. And my first thought was just a "Whaaa...?" Because the scene before it was all "Yay! We did it!" and then as soon as Yurek steps out onto the street he gets picked off by a sniper!?! It really caught me of guard, and it took me a second to realize what just happened. Then all the mixed emotion thoughts came to me and I thought "Why?" I mean, I get it that the remaining Germans would be pretty mad that people that they thought were nothing, beat them back. But taking the life of someone who was that young and innocent? What was the point? He had not done anything wrong, and yet just because of who he was, and what his people had done, he gets killed for that. All his people wanted was freedom, they fought for their freedom and rights, which made the Germans mad and started killing any Pole they saw. Don't we all want freedom? Imagine waking up every morning and coming to school worrying if there was a hidden sniper on the roof just waiting to kill you because of who you are. How would you feel if that was your life?

    1. This was horrible what that one German did to a 12-13 year old child!!! Think about it, if your brother, sister, parents, or even friends were walking out in the open and you just saw them drop all of a sudden, you would probably freak out. Just like the family did. When I read this I said to myself, "WHAT!!! WHY!" ;(
      It was just terrible.

    3. @Captain maniac,
I think that the Germans would kill anything that moves because the war was ending and too many people knew their faces and too much about the camps or the Ghetto. It was truly horrible what the soldier did to Yurek but why did he not kill the others or go into their house to investigate? Was it because he couldn't see him? Wouldn't he wonder why a young boy was walking around when he shouldn't be? What do you think?

    4. I think it's just dumb in my opinion! Why would you kill anything you see in sight like what happens if they didn't even do anything wrong. I think they were killing them was because they were trying to fight back for peace.

I think it was because the Germans were upset that the Polish people were fighting back, so they decided to try and take out as many as possible just because they were there

Personally I think that it was because the Polish people and the people in the ghettos fought back, they were mad that people were trying to fight back. To have their own lives and freedom, the Germans didn't like that though, they wanted things their way. What do you think?

I think that when the Polish people tried to fight back, it started to work, so the people that got sent to the ghettos were trying to help as well, but with no weapons, they cant do much.
Do you think that if the Polish teamed up with the Jewish, would they win or lose with the Germans with not as many soldiers?

Actually they did have weapons, probably not as good quality, but they did have weapons. Both the Poles and the people in the ghettos realized that they were both fighting for the same cause and kind of joined together. I think that they would actually be able to fend for themselves for at least a little while. Unfortunately the Germans are strong, and they would soon hear about the uprising in Poland and send in reinforcements, and eventually the people of Poland would run out of things they could use to fight with. What do you think?

      Delete
  26. @Pixelated Dragon
I think that the weapons that they had were probably dull knives, shards of broken glass, and possibly weaker guns. But the German soldiers could just kill off all living things in the area, but the Jews and the Polish could hide under stuff or in basements to survive and find food to supply them. I agree the Germans weapons are most advanced and powerful but if the Jewish kill a german and get their weapons, what will happen? If a whole lot of German soldiers did die, could the Jewish make a small army to fight back?
